First Friday Brings Visual and Performing Artists Downtown
The businesses of Downtown Huntsville, with the coordination of the Downtown Huntsville BIA launched the First Friday program in April. First Friday, a monthly evening event where people visit one or more downtown businesses to experience the amalgamation of cultural experiences offered by downtown Huntsville have to offer from food, art, entertainment, demonstrations, classes, new experiences, literature, poetry, film and more – this list is endless and with change from month to month by the offerings of the downtown businesses. More than ten downtown businesses are involved in the First Friday with activities and events that only happen on First Friday. First Friday takes place in downtown Huntsville on the first Friday of each month (May 7, June 4, July 2, etc.) with plans for this to be a year round happening.
First Friday is not a new concept, in many communities the first Friday of the month has become the day when art galleries are opened, new art shows launches, and people gather for cultural experiences. We are engaging our local arts community to provide art experiences within our downtown locations to draw people in. First Fridays is a successful initiative in many downtown communities, and we believe it will really assist us in making the downtown a vibrant place to be year-round on Friday nights. The local arts community has been extremely responsive, and we are excited that the Huntsville Arts Society is willing to work with the BIA on this initiative. The BIA has 12 businesses on board as destinations for April 9, and we anticipate that many more will join us in future months.
Features for May 7, 2010 include the chance to meet and see artists at work including Donna Devries, Terry Gill, and Janine Marson. The Muskoka Jazz Guys will be performing along with other local talent. There are special customer appreciation sales. Some unique workshops that is open to the public including candlemaking and How to Clean Your Bicycle. For the kids there is craft time and games night. The trick for visitors is to pick up your event listing early from the downtown merchants or online at http://www.huntsvilleartsociety.ca/may-schedule.html and plan your visit into the participating businesses. Or simply come downtown on May 7th and wander from store in the cultural walkabout that is what First Friday is all about. Most events are early evening events, but there are daytime events as well.
