Art & Lyrics Awards 2010
My painting is inspired by the Beatles song “Blackbird”, from the 1968 self-titled album “The Beatles [White Album]”. Easy to listen to. A true wonder. (I especially enjoy the bird singing within the song).
It is not a literal piece, but rather focuses on my interpretation of the lyrics and the emotion created within me as I listen to it. My painting speaks of the freedom expressed by the song and how growth in life is learned...Communities coming together as a whole...hardships can be overcome. | The outcome of my painting reflects my feelings in the words of the song “Orange Coloured Sky:"
I was walking along, minding my business When out of an orange coloured sky Flash! bam! alakzam! Wonderful you came by. |

Kate Oldham Under The Boardwalk |
The surreal dreamy lyrics and mood of the song “Cloudbusting”, by Kate Bush was the inspiration for this painting. The busting of clouds, change in the weather and the chance of the unexpected influenced the work. The rhythm of the violins invoke a constant movement which I also tried to convey.
| I’ve always loved the song “Under the Boardwalk” by the Drifters.
Under the boardwalk, we’ll be having some fun. I’ve tried to capture the sense of fun through the use of vibrant aqua and purple in fluid, relaxed lines. Splashes of gold bring to mind sunlight resting on the boardwalk pillars and playing tag with the shadows under the boardwalk. If you listen carefully, you may hear the sound of a carousel and fall in love under the boardwalk down by the sea. |

Nathan Dunn Understanding Only What Is Visible |
My wool piece was inspired by my partner’s words in music that captured a special art day in my sugar shack. The song is called Sugar. I spend many quiet hours in my sugar shack and the memory of sharing it inspired me to try to capture the feeling. I love watching the bush come alive at Sugar time with the quiet drama of snow melting and trees getting ready to burst forth. It is a luscious image for me.
| My piece is based off lyrics from Flyleaf’s “In the Dark” and takes the lyrics both literally in meaning as well as symbolically. The lyrics are primarily about enlightenment through religion; this piece is my attempt to portray visually what the artist expressed lyrically. The most prominent lyrics in the song that sum up the message the artist is trying to express are, “There’s only artificial light here” whereas the artist is trying to use the darkness as a metaphor for ignorance and light (artificial) as false enlightenment. My piece depicts a subject in a curious state, illuminated by artificial lighting in a natural environment.
