05/04/2010Last November (2009) HAS joined the Huntsville Festival of the Arts in an art auction to raise funds for community members who lost their homes when the Empire Hotel was destroyed by fire. It was not the first time HAS called out to artists to donate, nor (as unfortunately there will always be a cause) will it be the last. In fact, through  a variety of donation related events HAS members have contributed over $30,000 to local charities and causes over the past 6 years. The question is how do we keep the practice of acquiring art for donations sustainable both for the Artists themselves and for the organization or cause-in-need? The following article by Maria Brophy gives sound advice. Also check out related articles from ARTBizBlog.  As a final word, HAS will endeavour in any future fundraising event or partnership to uphold Brophy's 6 Principals for Giving Art to Worthy Causes.

http://drewbrophy.com/brophy-principal-giving-art-to-worthy-causes-while-protecting-the-value/
"We’ve developed our own principals on how to give to worthy causes and at the same time not give away the store.  It’s nice to be generous, but be careful not to lower the value of your art.  It’s a delicate balance.  And there’s one really important thing to realize:

When you have collectors who buy your art, it’s important to protect the value of it FOR THEIR SAKE. If you won’t do it for yourself, at least do it for the people who have supported your art career by purchasing art from you."

The exhibition will include the work of 10 artists from the Muskoka region.  The exhibition will deal with how the artists respond to this special region in their work.  It should evoke a real sense of place to the viewers in each artist's own special vision.  It will include a variety of media including drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking.  The works of art will be hung on walls in the entrance to the building as well as on walls adjacent to the entrance.   Sculpture stands will also showcase three dimensional work.)

The official spousal gifts for the G8 Summit were created by Huntsville fibre artist Marni Martin.

In the winter Martin was visited by a group from the Summit Management Office to inform her that Laureen Harper had chosen her work to offer as gifts to the spouses of the G8 leaders. Martin comments, “I was thrilled to have my work chosen and a little overwhelmed by the surprise of it all.”

Martin created one-of-a-kind scarves for each woman in silk. Research on each person was done to ensure that the individual scarves would suit the recipient and were culturally appropriate.

Each scarf was presented in a custom hand-crafted envelope by a Canadian paper maker along with an art card designed and created by Martin containing a brief artist bio.

This opportunity was one that Martin will never forget. “The entire process felt surreal,” Martin says, “It was an honour to create for such an occasion.” Mrs. Geertrui Van Rompuy, wife of Herman Van Rompuy, President of the EU Council wore hers for the official photo of the spouses taken Friday.
